About Us
1997….the Legend begins….
Sherwood Forest Brewers was started in 1997 born out of a noble dream to turn a home brewing hobby into a business. Dave Lambert had been brewing his own beer and sharing it with friends for years in the spirit of friendship and hospitality that Sherwood Forest was so famous for. He soon realized that he wanted to turn his hobby into a business – the ideal way to avoid the drudgery of a "regular" job and share his home-crafted brew with a wider audience.
With the help of two friends, the quest began. They struggled with understanding the business side of beer craft, from distribution to scaling up their home recipe to a larger scale brewing operation. The merry friends spent many hours in the trade learning the business of beer and refining their brew, striving to maintain the fine taste of the original home-brewed beer from Dave’s home. That year, they contracted with a brewing company that allowed them to brew on their system and the first batches of beer were produced.
2000….Sherwood Brewers Acquires its own Pub Brewery…..
With three years of experience, Sherwood Brewers moved to its own system, a 15 barrel Pub system in New York that was shipped, piece by piece, to a 3,000 square foot space in an old paper factory in Marlborough, Massachusetts. There, Dave and his friends officially brewed their very own first batch of brew from start to finish in late 2000 and celebrated accordingly.
And a fine Brew Master….
Jon Carlman was now the brew master – the genius who had had spent the last three years refining Sherwood Brewer’s Archer’s Ale recipe and was constantly tweaking the brew until it was the perfect descendent of our home brewed original. Today, Jon continues to work his magic as we develop new styles and flavors to please our current loyal customers and entice new followers. Among his recent successes is our wonderful new Sheriff’s IPA.
2001….Craft brewed ale…in cans!
Because of an increasingly large and loyal following that wanted to take our beer home, we just couldn’t keep up with the demand by offering Pub growlers, so we began looking for alternatives. Being the generous, friendly folk that we are, we wanted to offer our fine beer through liquor stores and distributors. We soon became the second company in the United States to offer craft brewed ale in cans – and still offer it today.
2004….the Legend grows…and the 12 oz. bottle arrives.
We moved to a new facility in 2004 and contracted with a large Massachusetts brewery to bottle our Archer’s Ale and Sheriff’s IPA so that we could offer these two fine brews in 12 oz. bottles. The popularity of these bottles was unmistakable – from 2004 to 2005 Sherwood Brewers grew 140%! We are still growing and continuing to expand our reach geographically. You can find our fine ales in MA, RI, CT, NH and ME.
Sherwood Brewers Today….
Dave Lambert continues to bring the story of Sherwood Brewers to distributors and merry men and women throughout New England so that they, too, can enjoy the high quality beer that he started brewing over a decade ago in his own kitchen. He also continues to sample the brew in the name of "quality control."
Jon Carlman continues to develop new and intriguing brews for Sherwood Brewers’ loyal customers. His recent offerings include Friar’s White Belgian and Maiden’s Blueberry, which will be available in May 2008.
